Using a series of Nf1 genetically-engineered mouse strains, researchers isolated low-grade glioma stem cells (CD133+ cells) for in vitro and in vivo brain tumor studies. These lines are authenticated optic glioma stem cells, with the ability to self-renew at limiting dilutions; express stem cell markers; differentiate into astrocytes, neurons and oligodendrocytes; and form glioma-like lesions following transplantation.
